Eagle Road, Batheaston
SR Architects Ltd. was hired in 2021 to design a 2-storey side extension and internal refurbishments for a semi-detached dwelling on a hillside site in Batheaston. The clients desired to create a new entrance to the house, additional living area at the ground floor and a large main bedroom suite on the first floor as well as to modernize the existing portions of the dwelling.
We designed the extension to appear as a subservient volume to the existing volume with a roof geometry that also stepped back and down from the main roof volume. This helped to incorporate a recess in the front of the extension to define the new entry point.
Materially, other units on the road had been extended with the same cast stone blockwork as the main houses, but this material tended to look less well proportioned or interesting. Our clients wanted to make an elegant expression of the added volume but did not want it to stick out or be incongruous with the main volume. We suggested a similar hued brick module to offer a new texture to the façade but at a scale that, again, helped the new volume appear subservient to the original. For a bit of boldness, our client chose a strong yellow to mark out the new entrance.
The project completed in summer 2023.
